Ingredient

Vitamin E

Vitamin E, called tocopherol on the ingredient list, is a natural antioxidant found in plant oils. It helps protect the skin against daily environmental stress, keeps it soft and supports its barrier. It also keeps the plant oils in a formula fresh. You find it in nine Abloom products.

Vitamin E
The source

What is it?

Vitamin E is a group of fat soluble antioxidants that plants make to protect their own oils. That is why seed and nut oils such as sunflower, almond and jojoba naturally contain it. On an INCI list you see it as tocopherol.

In skincare vitamin E does two things. On your skin it works as an antioxidant: it helps neutralise free radicals from UV light and pollution, which over time can make the skin look tired and older. In the bottle it protects the plant oils from going rancid, so a natural formula stays fresh for longer.

Vitamin E works best in good company. In our Miracle Oil it is the third ingredient, after jojoba and St John's wort oil. In the Luminous SPF 20+ it sits next to vitamin C, two antioxidants that complement each other. How it works

What does it do for your skin?

Antioxidant protection

Vitamin E helps neutralise free radicals from sunlight and pollution, and so helps protect the skin against daily environmental stress.

Softens and supports the barrier

As a fat soluble vitamin it helps keep the skin's protective layer supple, so the skin loses less moisture and feels softer.

Keeps plant oils fresh

Vitamin E protects the natural oils in a formula against oxidation, so the product keeps its quality for longer.

Frequently asked questions

Is vitamin E the same as tocopherol?+
Yes. Tocopherol is the name of vitamin E on an ingredient list. You sometimes also see tocopheryl acetate, a more stable variant. Abloom uses tocopherol.
Can you put pure vitamin E oil on your face?+
You can, but pure vitamin E oil is thick and sticky and can feel heavy. In a blend with light plant oils, as in a face oil or cream, it is easier to use and spreads better.
Does vitamin E protect against the sun?+
No. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, not a sun filter. It helps the skin cope with stress from UV light, but you still need an SPF. Our Luminous SPF 20+ combines zinc oxide with vitamin E and vitamin C.
Can you combine vitamin E and vitamin C?+
Yes, they make a strong pair. Vitamin C and vitamin E support each other as antioxidants, which is why you often find them together, as in our SPF 20+.
Is vitamin E suitable for oily skin?+
Yes, in a light formula. Vitamin E in a cleanser, a light cream or a serum suits oily and combination skin. Very rich, pure vitamin E oil can feel too heavy on oily skin.
Is vitamin E good for dry skin?+
Yes. Vitamin E helps keep the skin barrier supple and hold on to moisture, which dry skin welcomes. Combine it with a nourishing cream or oil, such as our Day Cream or Miracle Oil.
