Ceramides

Ceramides are fats that your skin makes itself. Together with other lipids they hold the outer layer of your skin together and help it keep moisture in. At Abloom you find ceramide NP in the Supreme Skin Elixir, in a base of aloe vera juice.

Ceramides
The source

What is it?

The outer layer of your skin works a bit like a brick wall. The skin cells are the bricks, and a mix of fats is the mortar in between. Ceramides are an important part of that mortar. They help keep the wall closed, so moisture stays in and the skin feels comfortable.

When the skin barrier has fewer ceramides, for example with age, in dry winter air or after too much cleansing, the skin can feel tight, rough and dry. Read more about the causes in our article on dry skin.

On an ingredient list you see names such as ceramide NP. In our Supreme Skin Elixir ceramide NP is one of the supporting ingredients and is used in a small amount. It works together with hyaluronic acid and tremella, which hold water, all in a base of aloe vera juice instead of water.

How it works

What does it do for your skin?

Supports the skin barrier

Ceramides are part of the natural protective layer of the skin. They help keep it closed and resilient.

Helps hold moisture

A healthy barrier loses less water. That helps the skin stay hydrated and feel less tight.

Comfort for dry skin

Dry and rough skin feels smoother and softer when the barrier gets the right support.

Frequently asked questions

What are ceramides?+
Ceramides are fats that your skin makes itself. They sit between the skin cells in the outer layer and help keep moisture in.
What is ceramide NP?+
Ceramide NP is one of the types of ceramide found in the skin. In skincare it is used to support the skin barrier.
What is the difference between ceramides and hyaluronic acid?+
Hyaluronic acid binds water in the skin. Ceramides help keep the barrier closed, so that water stays in. They complement each other, which is why the Supreme Skin Elixir contains both.
Are ceramides good for dry skin?+
Yes. Dry skin often benefits from support for its barrier. Ceramides help the skin hold on to moisture and feel softer.
Can I combine ceramides with retinol or vitamin C?+
Yes. Ceramides are gentle and go well with most ingredients. They are a comfortable partner for stronger actives.
